800 kids scrambled for eggs in one giant drop at WFCU event in LaSalle

Rain and Easter eggs seem to go together. Last year’s WFCU Egg Drop saw rain and chilly weather, and so it was on Saturday morning, but organizers found a way to beat the wet weather this year.

The fourth annual egg drop at the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex in LaSalle usually has three egg drops in categories for children age two to 10 to gather eggs off the field once they’re dropped from a helicopter.

But with the clouds turning ominous and rain already falling, organizers merged all three age groups for one giant drop featuring 800 children scrambling across the field picking up plastic eggs.

“It was a bit of touch and go here,” said Beth Anne Prince, manager of community investment at WFCU, which organized the event.

“It was a fantastic crowd. … It only took two days to sell out. We ended up doing one drop and we had all 800 children out on the field. And it was a huge success.”

Indeed, the kids didn’t seem bothered by the rain, perhaps because the temperature wasn’t as low as last year, about 16 C at drop time, so they focused on racing across the field gathering up eggs.

Afterwards, the eggs are exchanged for chocolate Easter bunnies and activity guides at the organizing tent.

The event costs participants nothing, said Prince. The idea is just to hold a family event.

“There’s no cost for entry. … It’s part of our WFCU credit Union’s Inspire program. We do things for the community, to bring families together, to entertain, to educate, and it’s something that we give back to the communities that we serve.

About 75 volunteers pitched in to make the event happen, she said.
